In the fall of 2000, after moving from central Pennsylvania to Boston for a software job, I began gigging around the city, playing guitar wherever they'd have me. I mostly jumped onto rock shows, and I got to know a lot of great bands in and around Massachusetts; I'd started a new label, Losing Blueprint, and wanted to get more involved in documenting the local indie- and math-rock scene.

A year later, I started reaching out about putting together a compilation, which I hoped would be a kickoff for future projects as well as a coherent album in its own right. Many of the bands were from Boston and its immediate environs, though a few were farther-flung (Philly's Method and Result, Gainesville's PopCanon, Boise's A Radio With Guts). The tracks starting showing up in my mailbox (literally, on CDRs) and I ultimately assembled the 15-song collection, with the tongue-in-cheek title "The Luxury Sounds".

The comp came out in the summer of 2002, and that fall I organized a showcase with more than half of the roster, giving each attendee a free copy of the CD. I continued to work with many of the groups, releasing albums, EPs and seven-inches over the following years. Listening back in 2021, I feel fortunate to have received so many excellent songs by so many excellent bands, and I hope you'll enjoy hearing it now, again or the first time. --Andrew Wagner, January 2021
